Introduction:

The Empire State Building is a skyscraper of 102 floors. This structure was intended to be the first 100 story building.

Style:

The style of this structure is Art Déco, which means it has a lot of decoration.

History:

In 1930 was inaugurated the Chrysler Building, located on Lexington Avenue in New York. At that moment it was the tallest building in the world. But John Jakob Raskob, commissioned William Frederick Lamb to do a taller building than the Chrysler.

So it was how The Empire State started to be built on March 17 in 1930 in 410 days.

When it was finished to build the president of the United States, Herbert Hoover inaugurated the tallest skyscraper in New York, switching a button from The White House, on May 1 in 1931, costing 41 millions of dollars, by then it was the tallest building in the world until 1971.

Type of structure:

As we said the architects Shreve, Lamb i Harmon Associates, received the order to do the tallest building in the world, to get it they decided to do a steel frame. So this means the Empire State Building it’s a frame structure, which means that it is triangulated, trussed, and hanging.

Forces involved:

Some external forces that engineers needed to consider when designing the Empire State Building were focusing on things like air resistance, water resistance, earthquakes, tension and friction. So the internal forces are gravity, magnetic, electrical, and spring forces. A curiosity about that is that in 1945, a plane ran into the building and it held its ground. However the twin towers fell on the ground, so the Empire State Building is very preparated.

Shape:

The shape of the structure is a set of rectangular prisms going up the building.

Materials:

The skeleton is made of steel, wood, or reinforced concrete which is designed to withstand a load of objects.

Curiosities:

-The top floor of the building was intented to be used as an airship landing platform. However, the movement of the structure discouraged this use for safety reasons.

- Thanks to the powerful spotlights installed in 1964, the Empire State is illuminated on dates marked. Green on St. Patrick's Day, red about the Football World Cup, yellow on the premiere of Simpsons movie...

- Nowadays the Empire State Building is used by the government as an office building.
